One stormy night at sea, there is a sea wreck. All the
passengers on board drown, except for Lemuel Gulliver. Gulliver, who is an
excellent swimmer and swims for miles before he reaches shore. Gulliver is very
tired and decides to sleep. He will look for food after he had sufficient rest.
Gulliver sleeps for a whole day. When he wakes up, the
sun is beating down upon him. He tries to move, but he can’t. There are ropes
tying his hair, hands, legs, to the ground. There are little men running all around
him. Someone has a tiny ladder and is climbing up to him.
The little man is no bigger than Gulliver’s thumb
nail. He comes up to his ears and says: ‘you are in the land of Lilliput; we
are Lilliputians. We are taking you to our emperor, so please do not make any
trouble, there are a lot of people in the city’. Gulliver almost laughs at the
threat, but nodes.
A huge wooden structure with wheels is brought.
Gulliver is slid on to it after much struggle. The wooden structure is pulled
through the streets of Lilliput with all the Lilliputians lining up the
streets.
There is a carnival atmosphere which the Lilliputians
seem to be enjoying. Finally, they arrive at the emperor’s palace. The emperor is
there to receive Gulliver: ‘you are indeed a strange person. If you want to
stay here, you will have to help the people in the city’. Gulliver agrees.
Gulliver is freed. The Lilliputians give him food,
water and make a house for him. It is a big effort by the Lilliputians, who are
glad to have him. Gulliver stays with them, helping with many small tasks, such
as building a dock, a hospital, a museum and a library. He also repairs
people’s houses and the theatre in the city.
But not everything in Lilliput is happiness. There is
something terrible happening. The
neighbouring kingdom of Bleuse is not friendly with Lilliput, and their king has
declared war on them. There are a hundred ships on the sea ready to attack the
city of Liliput.
